What keeps coming up

Two years interviewing the people building the continent's digital infrastructure — heads of public agencies, founders, researchers, regulators. One obstacle comes up almost every time, and nobody treats it as a technical problem.

A summit in Algiers. A delegation from Central Africa. Three working languages, an interpreter hired the night before through a WhatsApp group, briefing documents emailed to a personal address. The caterer was vetted. The interpreter was not.

Between Brazzaville and Algiers: four thousand seven hundred kilometres, and not one language shared in the street.

Africa's language barrier is not a market abstraction. It is a journey I make.

Manifesto

You can be perfectly connected and still be outside, if everything on the network is written in a language you do not speak.
