What keeps coming up
Two years interviewing the people building the continent's digital infrastructure — heads of public agencies, founders, researchers, regulators. One obstacle comes up almost every time, and nobody treats it as a technical problem.
A summit in Algiers. A delegation from Central Africa. Three working languages, an interpreter hired the night before through a WhatsApp group, briefing documents emailed to a personal address. The caterer was vetted. The interpreter was not.
Between Brazzaville and Algiers: four thousand seven hundred kilometres, and not one language shared in the street.
Africa's language barrier is not a market abstraction. It is a journey I make.

What two years on air eventually teach you.
The price of entry
What artificial intelligence changes about the cost of becoming a company: a seven-chapter series from the experience of an entrepreneur without capital.
Fifteen dinars withdrawn for every dinar spent
In Algeria in 2025, fifteen times more money was withdrawn from cash machines than spent electronically with merchants.

Fifty licences for one market
Flutterwave holds over fifty licences to sell the same service across some thirty countries. It is not a trophy. It is a bill.

Leaving at four
A chief financial officer told me he was going to pick up his daughter from school for the first time in six years, and that he owed it to a machine. I found the story beautiful. Then I looked at who in his department had disappeared so that this hour could exist. Seven episodes.
